Miscellaneous Fiscal Paper

Bank Check

Bank of Wilmington Check, Wilmington 1857 Bank of Wilmington Check, Wilmington 1857
Fiscal paper on any antebellum North Carolina Bank is extremely rare compared to the banknotes themselves. It is amazing that this July 13, 1857 check number 2465 drawn on the Bank of Wilmington instructing the cashier of the Merchant’s Bank of New Berne to pay to the order of De Raphel Brown the sum of $991.30 survived. On the front of the check above there is some swirls drawn that maybe a cancellation but it is not clear if that was the intent.

The back of the check shown to the right clearly shows that Mr. Brown did not travel to New Berne and cash the check instead endorsing it over to E. H. Saunderson. He in turn endorsed it to another party. You can trace the progression on the back. It makes one wonder if this check ever completed its cycle. It clearly circulated as money and $991.30 was a considerable sum for it not to have been redeemed.

The check was printed by the partnership of Baldwin, Bald & Cousland, New York and Bald, Cousland & Co. of Philadelphia. Within two years they would further consolidate with other banknote printers forming the American Banknote Company.
