Presidential Arts Medals The Apollo Lunar Series
At the asylum we are products of the sixties and have long been interested in anything associated with flight or space. Growing up watching the Gemini and Apollo missions unfold on television made us full-fledged space cadets. So, for us anything space related in collectibles is of immense interest.
One of my favorite space related issues is the series of large, high relief medals issued by Presidential Arts presented here. The series featuring a medal for each of the scheduled lunar landing missions – Apollo 11 through 17 were designed by Ralph J. Menconi. Mr. Menconi designed literally hundreds of medals for Presidential Arts. His prolific work can be seen in many of Presidential Arts many theme based series.
The Apollo series was one of the shorter ones consisting of only seven medals. The medals are 2½ inches (63mm) in diameter and struck in both .999 fine silver and bronze by Medallic Art Company. Presidential Arts also marketed a number of different holders for the series.

Packaging Options Available
In addition to marketing the medals themselves Presidential Art also offered many options to house your individual medal or complete set. The silver medals above are shown in the Capital Plastics complete set holder. This holder was available in both black and white. The bronze medals are shown in the Capital Plastics individual holders. They were also available in both black and white.
PAM also offered velvet lined cases with sockets to hold each coin in the set. These were available in both blue and burgundy.
Despite all the options available the vast majority were shipped in the standard Medallic Art Company cardboard box shown above.
Bonus Medal Lunar Landing Medal
While not a part of the Presidential Art – Lunar Landing Series this medal was separately marketed by PAM. Also, struck by Medallic Art Company it was available in both .999 fine silver and bronze measuring 2½ inches (63mm) in diameter. Stamp collectors will recognize the obverse design as being the same as 1969 10 cent air mail (Scott #C76).
