About the Asylum

The Coin-n-Medal Collectors’ Asylum site was started in late 1998 as a vehicle to both share knowledge about numismatics and to help its author develop his HTML knowledge. In naming the site inspiration was taken from the fact that in both my hobby and profession many people think you must be crazy to do what I do. I have lost count of how many times my sanity was questioned by non-collectors whenever I relate a story about the acquisition of some favored piece. Also as test engineer who enjoys the challenge of solving new problems and developing new solutions – well you get the point. Thus, the Coin-n-Medal Collectors’ Asylum was envisioned to be a place where like minded individuals could share their knowledge and “lunacy” for their hobby.

From this simple beginning the Asylum has continued to grow, expand and even spawn new sites. Over time more e-Exhibits were added, some modified and others enhanced. One of the original exhibits was a simple presentation of my collection of Official Presidential Inaugural medals from Truman to, at the time, Clinton which really went unnoticed until the 2000 Presidential elections. Then email started pouring in from people interested in where to get the newly elected President’s medal. Well one thing led to another and before you knew it I had sponsorship for a new site design, URL and online sales for the Bush medal. From this the first standalone site spawned from the asylum was born – www.InauguralMedals.com!

I have made many new friends through the site and have developed a clientele for some of my collection’s duplicates. I have developed sites for others in the hobby and consulted on site design issues on both numismatic and non-numismatic sites. Plans are in the works for another exhibit to spun-off into its own site. Since, as new ideas for numismatic exhibits arose I tried to use new techniques to present them there currently is some disjointed look to the exhibits. A site redesign, of which this is a part, is also underway. Hopefully you will enjoy the exhibits or find some interesting item in my inventory that will have made your trip to the Asylum worthwhile.

About the Author

I have been an avid collector of many things my entire life it seems, but numismatics – coins, medals, tokens and paper money – are my passion. I have tried the past few years to focus my collecting efforts to items related to my home state – North Carolina! True, I’ll be the first to admit that I have not been entirely successful. I am active in my local coin club, a director of my state organization and a life member of the American Numismatic Association. I have exhibited successfully on the local, state and national levels. I have written for my local club’s newsletter, the state organization’s journal and even had one piece published in the ANA’s Numismatist. I do truly enjoy the hobby and the people in it. I hope you find value and enjoyment in my site and I hope to hear from you soon.
